It sounds like you could be dealing with an infection like one called bacterial vaginosis (an example only).
I know you don’t want to go to the gynecologist for fear that it might hurt, but the only way to know for sure what is going on is to see a gynecologist for further evaluation of the situation since the Pediatrician isn’t sure what’s going on. And since this will be your first time I would recommend seeing a female gynecologist because I think it will make you feel more comfortable when it comes to talking about what is going on.
Also, when you schedule the first appointment you can let it be known that you want to talk to the doctor in your regular clothes first before anything else is done. Then let her know at the same time your concerns about the exam at this appointment. When it does come to do the exam if the doctor is really good they will explain everything they are doing as they do it so that you will know what’s going on.
In the mean time I am including the link to a site that may help you find more information. The link is at: http://forums.obgyn.net/young-women
I do have one question for you though. Please e-mail me off site with the subject line: "itchy, swollen, sore vaginal area" so that I will know what it’s in regards to.
