I tend to get urinary tract infection when I drink iced tea. Why?
I am a T-4 Para and I self catheterize. I can only drink one glass of iced tea a week because I get urinary tract infection from it. It doesn’t matter if the tea is black, green or white, it still gives me an infection. Iced tea is one of my favorite summer time treats. My urologist has no idea why this happens. Any ideas?

All I can think of is that you may have put too much sugar into the drink or have a reaction to the caffeine. I would try drinking the tea mixed with cranberry juice, 100%, and see if that helps eliminate the problem. Either that or drink tea and then drink the cranberry juice or take a cranberry supplement.
Cranberry juice has always worked for me regarding any bladder or urinary infection, old time remedy handed down from my Grandma who was a nurse.
(Even helped our family dog years ago, the vet asked how we got rid of it and was surprised!)
The caffeine or sugar in the tea may have some effect. However, it is also possible that the catheterization, not the iced tea, is the issue. I am not implying that you don’t take care of yourself. I am just suggesting another possible cause of your recurrent UTI. Catheterization puts people at risk of UTI. Many doctors recommend a low daily dose of antibiotics for people who need to self cath, to help prevent UTI. I have spina bifida and cath 4x each day. I take a low dose of antibiotic daily, and also drink cranberry juice daily. I rarely get UTI. In fact, it has been several years since I had a UTI.
