How long will antibiotics affect my birth control?
I am on birth control and was given an antibiotic prescription today. I’m taking the antibiotics today and for 3 more days.
How long will they reduce the effectiveness of my birth control?

If you are taking oral contraceptives that give you a period every 28 days, you will need to use some other kind of protection until after your next period.
Antibiotics can interfere with the body’s absorption and utilization of the hormones in birth control pills. Birth control pills prevent ovulation. So this interference can cause you to ovulate, which can increase your risk of pregnancy.
Antibiotics affect the liver’s metabolism of birth control pills. Antibiotics also affect the "good" bacteria in the intestines that allow your body to use the birth control pill hormones.
Due to the lack of "real" clinical studies, birth control/antibiotic interactions are largely self-reported, but when the end result could be pregnancy, it is best to err on the side of caution
