thrush is from a yeast infection. my pediatrician told me that everyones body (including babies) has a certain amount of yeast. Babies systems are sometimes not capable of handling the amount of yeast in their system. My son has had this condition a few times. the pediatrician had me purchase an over the counter medication called "GENITIAN VIOLET". he gets it twice per day for 3 days. THAT CLEARS IT UP. the only problem with it is, it will stain their mounth and lips purple (and also any FABRIC that it drips on… i give my son his when he’s only wearing a diaper). The Genitian Violet’s cost was $1.59 here in Michigan.
AS FOR THE ANSWER above mine… babies DO NOT get thrush from dirty bottles and nipples. they CAN infect a NON-SILICONE nipple. my doctor told us to disinfect everything that came into contact with his mouth during treatment. thrush does NOT come from a baby/infant touching their genitalia… I don’t know WHY someone would think that! (rolling my eyes). also, thrush is NOT related to diaper rash! thrush can GIVE a baby diaper rash because the yeast infection filters through their system… you MAY notice the babies butt crack is irritated but not the entire bottom. here’s a site that may be helpful to you: http://www.medicinenet.com/thrush/page3.htm
GOOD LUCK MOM
Usually w/ antibiotics(is nystatin one?lol) you see improvement within 1-2 days. Thrush is a fungal infection related to diaper rash, it can be caused by dirty bottles or nipples, or even if your little one puts their hand in their diaper or touches their privates during a diaper change and puts hand in mouth soon afterwards. Good luck!
Babys get thrush from objects or even their own hands that has germs on it.they can get it from nipples not being cleaned proper and those pacifiers are breeding grounds for thrush.a baby also can get thrush from medicines like respitory medicines and some antibiotics. They can even get sores on their bottoms because the thrush travels to their stomach then to their bowels when they eat or nurse.
Yikes, I feel for you. My daughter got it when she was just 2 weeks old. She got it from the moisture during nursing. Then I got it on my nipples too and we just kept passing it back and forth. It took 2 weeks for hers to clear up. I used the Nystatin for her (which made her really gassy and irritable) and I had been putting her medicine on my nipples as well, but didn’t work. It seemed to clear up the most when I used Mycolog cream for myself. Then I wasn’t giving it back to her, because my nipples were clear of it. It’s bascially a yeast infection of the mouth. I think excess warm moisture seems to be the culprit. If you are not nursing it will probably take less time for it to clear up. I also heard that rubbing some yogurt in the mouth can help too. I didn’t try it though. I was too afraid since she was only a few weeks old.
Instead of antibiotics, which can actually make the yeast thrive, I made my own treatment. Get a really good acidophilus and take the recommended dosage. ( This is if you are nursing) Then take one of the capsules and open it, mix some lanolin with the acidophilus powder and put on your nipples before AND after nursing. Also put some on baby’s pacifier and/or bottle. Do this every time until it clears up. This really works well. My first two kids had thrush and passed it on to me. I tried the Gentian Violet and all it did was stain everything. I hope everything works out for you and your little one!
Sorry, you asked how long it takes to clear up. It just depends on how severe the yeast is in you and baby. It could take a week or in my sister-in-law’s case, 2 months. Or more. It just depends on your baby. Hope this helps.
