How long does it take for a first herpes type 1 outbreak to occur?

i kissed a person without an outbreak who has herpes 1 over a month ago and i just got a little red bump in the corner of my mouth.
i also drank very hot coffee the other day.

the first reaction would occur a few days after the encounter with the virus. the reaction is usually not localized to the mouth. it can be asymptomatic meaning without any symptoms, or cold-like symptoms may occur and vary from mild to more than mild.
once the virus has established latency it hides in the ganglions of the sensory nerves. the virus will stay for life-time. certain situations like stress or illness can cause a re-activation and the virus comes down the sensory nerves and forms a blister at the point of entry, most often the lips, or nose, or eye. in your case it would be the mouth.
before you freak out, know that most people have HSV-1, which is associated with oral herpes. (in some cases hsv-2 (associated with genital herpes) can be found in the oral region…yea, i’m sure you can figure that one out) also, most people never experience any outbreaks, don’t even know they have the virus. the blister that you had was most likely not herpes. herpes blisters are painful and filled with a clear fluid that contains the active virus. once the blister bursts, it forms a crust and then heals.

I would get a blood test to make sure you dont have it
but you most likely dont.
Normally 2-12 days. For me, it was 3-4.
